You can now register domain names with such new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) names as .cheap, .beer, or .accountant. So whats behind the names and is this an opportunity?

GTLDs are part of the Domain Name System (DNS). They're the last label of fully qualified domain names such as .com, .edu, and .gov. These are used to give human-readable addresses to the Internet's cryptic addresses.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) decided in 2012 that the 22 existing gTLDs weren't enough. So, ICANN decided to create up to 1,400 new TLDs. They claimed t "These additional gTLDs will enhance competition, innovation and choice in the Domain Name space, providing a wider variety of organizations, communities and brands new ways to communicate with their audiences."

Obviosly this is a way for ICANN and domain registrants to make money. Many of these domains may fall by the wayside but as a marketing tool and with the restriction of the current limited domains im sure some will break into the main stream. Its the product and geographic names that i think will help marketers and companies get accross new or redifine an existing business proposition.

You can, use the ICANN 'Trademark Clearinghouse' a centralized database of trademarks, to protect your trademarks at the second level of new gTLDs. The second-level is the word before the .gTLD. This will cost you $150 per trademark per year.

Like all thinks new some things will work others not, but im sure new descriptive domains would have been the obvious way of doing things if the web was designed from the outset for the like of me and you to use and was intended to be a marketing and profit making platform!
